This historical/contemporary map is me writing a love letter, in mosaic, to my home. I used a 1775 surveyor’s map as a template of Southwestern Pennsylvania, giving pride of place to the rivers and mountains. You can see revolutionary war forts and the very modern Great Allegheny Passage bike trail sitting comfortably side by side. I like to build maps that you can follow, not so much to a destination, but to an idea. This one makes connections between where we were as a new country and where we are now in real time.
