Eclypsis was inspired while sitting through a bad theatre production. The highlighted backdrop was an illuminated, abstract image of a stained glass window. Instead of following the actors, I found myself re-designing the image throughout the show with my own materials. The vertical slate was especially satisfying as a material and as a compositional element.
I didn’t see the eclipse in the composition until after it was complete. I find that meticulous planning makes for good art, but leaving room for a few unknowns while I am working can create the bits of magic that have the power to spark emotion.
